Marshall Health Network - Edwards Cancer Institute (ECI) has been selected by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) to participate in the groundbreaking Cancer Moonshot Biobank Study to advance cancer research and treatment.
The Cancer Moonshot Biobank collects and stores tissue and blood samples, along with medical information, from patients over time to better understand how cancer changes and responds to treatment. By analyzing samples at different points during a patient’s care, researchers aim to develop better and more personalized therapies to patients.
Currently there are only 140 locations nationwide participating in this clinical trial, and ECI is the only hospital in West Virginia at this time. As the first in the state, ECI is helping drive the future of personalized cancer care.
“This initiative is a major step forward in understanding cancer at a deeper level,” said Krista Denning, MD, at Cabell Huntington Hospital, Laboratory Medical Director and Principal Investigator of Cancer Moonshot Biobank Research Study. “We are honored to be at the forefront of this effort, providing samples that will help researchers uncover new insights and improve treatment options for patients in our community and across the country.”
How the study works:
- Patients at Edwards Cancer Institute voluntarily consent to provide tissue and blood samples before, during and after treatment.
- Medical records are reviewed over at least five years to track treatment responses.
- The collected data is used to identify why some treatments are more effective than others, ultimately improving cancer care for current and future patients.
By participating in this national effort, Edwards Cancer Institute is reinforcing its mission to advancing health in cancer treatment and ensuring that innovative research benefits patients both locally and nationwide.
