Trick-or-Treat Safety
Monday, October 19, 2026
Everyone loves a good scare on Halloween, but not when it comes to safety. Before your little ghosts and goblins head out for treats, keep these tips in mind for a safe and fun Halloween:
- Choose costumes carefully. Make sure costumes and shoes fit properly and don’t block your child’s vision or create a tripping hazard.
- Be seen. Give children flashlights or glow sticks and add reflective tape to costumes or treat bags to help drivers spot trick-or-treaters after dark.
- Stick to well-lit areas. Use sidewalks and crosswalks whenever possible and visit homes with porch lights on. Remind children to never enter a stranger’s home or vehicle.
- Keep an eye on traffic. Look both ways before crossing the street and avoid running between parked cars. Put phones and other distractions away while walking.
- Check treats before eating. Have children wait until they get home so an adult can inspect candy and other treats. Be especially mindful of food allergies and choking hazards.
- Stay together. Young children should always trick-or-treat with a trusted adult. Older children going out without an adult should travel in groups and have a planned route and return time.
And if your little skeleton isn’t feeling well, it may be best to let them rest their bones at home.
