St. Mary’s Medical Center Launches Community COPD Screening Program

Tuesday, March 10, 2026

Marshall Health Network - St. Mary’s Medical Center (St. Mary’s) is launching a new COPD Community Screening Program to help identify individuals who may be at risk for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), a common but often underdiagnosed lung condition.

COPD is a preventable and treatable disease, yet many people are unaware they have it until symptoms become severe. Early diagnosis can improve quality of life, slow disease progression, and reduce emergency department visits and hospitalizations.

Beginning March 9, in recognition of National Pulmonary Rehabilitation Week, community members experiencing shortness of breath, chronic cough or other respiratory symptoms are encouraged to schedule a simple screening using spirometry testing.

“This program allows us to proactively identify individuals who may be living with undiagnosed COPD and connect them with the care and education they need earlier,” said Rhonda Sheridan, RRT, Pulmonary Rehabilitation Coordinator at St. Mary’s. “Early detection truly makes a difference in how patients feel and function.”

Screenings are conducted in the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Department at St. Mary’s and are available by appointment. Most insurances, including Medicare and Medicaid, cover the cost of the screening.

Those who should consider a screening include:

  • Individuals with ongoing or worsening shortness of breath
  • Those with a chronic cough lasting six months or longer
  • Current or former smokers with a significant smoking history
  • Individuals with occupational exposure to chemicals or heavy metals

Call 304.399.7402 to schedule an appointment.
