Marshall Health Network’s Dr. Burdick Honored for His Tenure on American Hospital Association’s Committee on Clinical Leadership

Marshall Health Network is proud to recognize Hoyt Burdick, MD, chief medical officer, for his distinguished service as an appointed member of the American Hospital Association’s (AHA) Committee on Clinical Leadership (CCL) from 2023–2025. The 24-member committee selects eight new leaders annually from health care and hospital systems nationwide to serve three-year terms. The committee provides clinical expertise to guide AHA advocacy efforts and serves as a resource to advise the AHA Board on key policy issues.

“Patient safety and quality of care were the top issues we focused on from my first meeting in Nashville in 2023 through my final meeting in Minneapolis in 2025,” said Dr. Burdick. “Nearly one in four hospitalized patients still suffers harm, and at least one-fourth of these events are preventable. There is much more work to be done.”

Dr. Burdick also highlighted the committee’s shared perspective during national health care challenges. “The CCL became a vital resource when Hurricane Helene disrupted production at the Baxter International IV fluid plant in North Carolina in 2024. We all faced significant financial risk from the CHANGE Healthcare cyberattack in 2023. Patients and providers remain vulnerable to policy decisions that impact programs, and we must use education and political goodwill to advocate for those we serve.”

He added that while he was inspired by the expertise of committee members—including physicians and nurse executives from leading institutions such as Massachusetts General Hospital, Yale, Henry Ford, Jefferson Health and Intermountain—he was equally impressed by the AHA staff. “They were consistently ahead of emerging issues with research and policy insights, often before these topics reached national media.”

“One lesson I learned from my CCL colleagues is that we are all in this together—from the largest urban academic quaternary systems to the smallest critical access hospitals,” said Dr. Burdick. “My three years on the CCL went by too quickly. I gained invaluable perspective from passionate leaders who reminded me that the challenges we face at Marshall Health Network are not unique. We may have different mission statements, but we share a commitment to advancing health, inspiring hope and serving our communities.”

“We are incredibly proud of Dr. Burdick and his well-deserved appointment to this AHA clinical leadership role,” said Scott Raynes, CEO of Marshall Health Network. “His tireless pursuit of high-quality care is evident each day at MHN, and we are honored to see his leadership recognized nationally. We thank him for his dedication and service to the committee and to our academic health system.”

Hoyt Burdick, MD, MMM, CPE, FACP, FCCP, FAAPL, FACHE, CPHQ, CPPS, serves as chief medical officer for Marshall Health Network, where he oversees performance improvement and patient safety, infection prevention, regulatory compliance, medical staff services, peer review and credentialing, and supervision of physician medical directors. He also serves as the health system’s Graduate Medical Education representative for both the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine and the Marshall Community Health Consortium residencies and fellowships.

Before his current role, Dr. Burdick practiced for 10 years as an intensivist and pulmonologist in private practice while serving as volunteer faculty for the School of Medicine. He earned his medical degree in 1980 from the University of Mississippi School of Medicine, where he also completed training and became board-certified in internal medicine, pulmonology and critical care.
