Wednesday, April 16, 2025

Marshall Health Network (MHN) recognizes the vital role of laboratory staff during Medical Laboratory Professionals Week, April 20-26, 2025.

National Medical Laboratory Professionals Week is an annual celebration for all medical laboratory professionals and pathologists who are involved in the analysis and interpretation of more than 14 billion lab tests in the US every year, playing a pivotal role in health care treatment decisions and patient advocacy.

Matthew Brooks, MLS(ASCP)CM, system director of clinical laboratory services at MHN, emphasizes the critical role of laboratory professionals in delivering accurate, high-quality test results that support reliable health care. “As the often-unsung heroes of the medical profession, our laboratory professionals perform at the utmost highest level of expectation, accepting nothing less than 100% accuracy in their work,” he said.

Using the latest technology, they analyze a range of specimens from blood and tissue to bacteria and viruses, providing essential data for diagnosis and treatment. They also play a vital role in life-saving efforts, such as ensuring safe blood transfusions in trauma and emergency situations.

Additionally, Brooks noted, “Working behind the scenes, few realize the impact that laboratory results have on the clinical outcome. Laboratory test results account for an estimated 75% of the decision-making process involved in a patient’s treatment plan and remain integral in the provider’s ability to diagnose illness and disease.”

During Medical Laboratory Professionals Week, please extend your thanks and appreciation to the hard-working scientists who make getting results their top priority.

MHN has several job opportunities in clinical laboratory science as well as laboratory support roles. Interested candidates are encouraged to visit www.marshallhealthnetwork.org/careers to learn more.
